Winning the game of life

This month’s Prerana festival entitled, ‘Winning the game of life - part 2’ is dedicated to celebrate the speedy recovery of H.H. Jayapataka Maharaj. Jayapataka Maharaj spoke through phone from the hospital. H.H. Radhanath Maharaj and H.H. Devamrita Maharaj were personally present. Following are some excerpts from the class.

H.H. Jaypataka Maharaj.

In the game of life, at various points we can choose to act in goodness, passion and ignorance. Whether we win ultimately depends upon the choices we make.

The Bhagavad Gita speaks about Vikarma, Karma and Akarma. If we do Akarma, i.e do our activities and offer the results to Krishna, we will win the game of life and get out of material existence.

But one who simply wants to win on the material plane, has to face the ‘dunking syndrome’. This is explained by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.  A person is dunked in the river and when he is about to die, he is allowed to breath once. But then he is dunked again. Similarly, on the material plane, apparent winning is like taking one breath before being dunked again in to misery.

In Australia I spent a weekend with some University students and Professionals of Indian origin. They were expressing their anxieties over the current economic meltdown. Now they are wondering about what the game of life really is. In today’s world, people are programmed to have the vision that simply by winning and accomplishing one can be satisfied. But success does not lead to happiness. It’s the other way round. First there is internal happiness and then there is success in life. Also society feels that increased affluence leads to more happiness, even though social statistics don’t match with this misconception. In USA 45.7% of Univ. students have at least one psychiatric disorder. Other scientific observations show that there is no correlation between happiness and increase of wealth once the basics of life are met. To win the game of life, we should extend the range of science and include the Bhagavad Gita. We have to design society in such a way that internal treasure is the main thing.

H.H.Radhanath Maharaj

To win the game of life, we have to consider the foundation upon which our life is built. If the foundation is the ever shifting circumstances of the world – the economy, the wealth or our prestige - then how can we win? Our life should be built on good character and integrity. Bhagavad Gita teaches that all that is important is good character and the right intent to please Krishna. Then even if we apparently lose, we win. But without the right intent of pleasing Krishna, even though we win, we lose ultimately. For example, at Las Vegas, the casinos are designed in such a way that even if someone apparently wins money in gambling, ultimately he loses everything. Material nature is designed in the same way; even if we apparently win, we have to face old age disease and death.

In the end there was kirtan and Prasad for all. Around 650 boys attended.
