The story of the potter by Srila Prabhupada

The story of the potter The potter is planning. He has got few pots and he is planning, "Now I have got these four pots and I will sell. I will make some profit. Then there will be ten pots. Then I'll sell ten pots, I'll make some profit. I'll get twenty pots and then thirty pots, forty pots. In this way I shall become millionaire. And at that time I shall marry, and I shall control my wife in this way and that way. And if she is disobedient, then I shall kick her like this."

So when he kicked, he kicked the pots and all the pots broke. (laughter) So then his dream is gone. You see?

Similarly, we are simply dreaming. With few pots we are simply dreaming that "These pots will be increased into so many pots, so many pots, so many pots," then finished. Don't make imagination, make plan.

That is... The guru, the spiritual master and the government should be careful that "These rascals may not make plan. This rascal may not make plan to be happy." Na yojayet karmasu karma-mūhān. This is karma-jagat, this world. This material world is that. They are already inclined, so what is the use? Loke vyayāyāmia-madya-sevā nityāstu jantu.

Just like sex life. Sex life is natural. It does not require any university education how to enjoy sex. They will enjoy it. Nobody... "Nobody is taught how to cry or how to laugh or how to enjoy sex life." There is a Bengali saying. That is natural. You don't require any education for this karma. Now they are making big, big plans to educate people how to work hard. This is waste of time. Educational institution should be for teaching people how to become Kṛṣṇa conscious, not to become this or that. That is waste of time.

Jayapataka Swami - Back in the Field!

By Abhijit Toley - January 25, 2009

Applause. The kind that bursts out from the hearts of the audience after a moment of stunned silence. The kind that seems to last forever. The kind that no one wants to ever end. The kind that follows a moment that everyone wants to etch into their memories for all time to come. The kind that typically follows an awesome performance that touches the hearts of the audience very deeply. Today, I was part of one such applause.

I am writing this while watching His Holiness Jayapataka Swami who is sitting in a wheelchair about twenty-five feet from me. It’s the 22nd annual Pune Yatra, in the bungalow of H. G. Krishna Chandra Prabhu in Pune, India. It’s as if the celestial giants have descended upon earth. What else would you say if you are amidst HH Radhanath Swami, HH Bhakticharu Swami, HH Jayapataka Swami, HH Chandramouli Swami, and HH Bhakti Vishwambhar Madhava Swami? A couple of days ago, on the first evening of this four-day Yatra, HH Radhanath Swami Maharaja indicated at the possibility that perhaps HH Bhakticharu Maharaja might join us all. This news was received very enthusiastically. But when he also told us that perhaps HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaja might also join us, the cheers were uproarious.

And why not? HH Jayapataka Maharaj is a darling of all the Vaishnavas. Srila Prabhupada declared that he is an eternal associate of Lord Chaitanya. Prabhupada gave him Sanyaas when he was just 21. He took up, and continues to execute, major responsibilities in Srila Prabhupada’s mission, including the Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir and many others. He is pretty much the spiritual master of the whole Navadwip Dham! One can’t think of Sri Mayapur Dham without thinking of Srila Jayapataka Swami Maharaja. His glories are unlimited. Not for nothing did Srila Prabhupada give him the name Jayapataka – the victory flag – signifying the victory of Lord Chaitanya’s Sankirtan Movement. Param Vijayate Sri Krishna Sankirtanam.

But recently, by the inconceivable will of the Lord, this glorious and extraordinarily brave soldier of Lord Chaitanya was put into a precarious situation. In the Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari Temple of ISKCON Juhu, Maharaja had a severe stroke of brain hemorrhage. Doctors said he had no chance. And even if he did survive, he would be no better than a vegetable. Devotees all over the world were shocked! The whole Vaishnava community of ISKCON united in their prayers to the Lord to let Maharaja stay longer on this earth and shower upon everyone his matchless association and mercy. Kirtans roared all over the world. HH Radhanath Swami Maharaja dedicated the Karthik Vrindavan Yatra to HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaja, where all devotees prayed fervently to the Lord for Jayapataka Swami Maharaja’s recovery. Thus there was hope, but the situation was still critical, and tense.

Over the next few weeks, I kept myself updated about Maharaja’s health by visiting www. jpsoffice. com. His condition has been steadily improving. According to the doctors, that’s a miracle. But for Krishna nothing is impossible. And how could it be, because He is the cause of all causes. Just before the Pune Yatra, only once, this thought had struck my mind: How nice will it be to have HH Jayapataka Maharaja with us in the Yatra? Surely, due to these recent events, devotees all over the world remembered the glories of Maharaja and thus got purified.

Maharaja is still recuperating, but things look in control now. He traveled for around four hours in an ambulance from Bombay to Pune just to give us his divine association. This is an example of his unlimited mercy. He addressed us briefly yesterday evening. He told us how grateful he was for all the devotees for praying for him. We were all touched. And then again, today while HH Radhanath Maharaja was showering us with the lotus words from his lotus mouth during the Srimad Bhagavatam class, entered the scene HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaja. As was planned, HH Radhanatha Swami Maharaja stopped his class and handed over the Vyasasana to HH Jayapataka Maharaja.

Maharaja’s speech is not completely back yet. So he had a devotee repeat his words, although one could understand quite a bit of what he spoke directly. Just his presence was electrifying. He spoke about his last year’s Bangladesh trip, his various helicopter rides, and also he spoke very fondly about his recent stay at the Bhakti Vedanta Hospital in Bombay. His every word was nectar for all the devotees. He informed us that every month around twenty-five patients become devotees in the Bhakti Vedanta Hospital. And then, out of his natural humility, he said that now that he had also been a patient in that hospital, he might also become a devotee.

More than once, my eyes were moistened by his words. He spoke for about an hour. The devotee who had made tens of thousands of devotees was all the while exhibiting his natural humility. Who can fathom the glories and sweetness of a true Vaishnava?

But what was it that was touching everyone’s heart? I had not been able to put it in words. That thought was there somewhere in my sub-consciousness, but I had not yet expressed it in words. HH Radhanath Maharaja had hinted at it more than once. This was a historic event, he said. But exactly what was historic? After enthralling the devotees by his humility, love, and humor, even in his far-from-perfect medical condition, he ended with: “It’s good to be back in the preaching field.”

That was it! That was the historic event. This great general of Lord Chaitanya’s army was back. Back from the dead. There was no chance for him, but here he was. Inspiring devotees, distributing Krishna Prem. Once again! “It’s good to be back in the preaching field”, he said.

Stunned silence. Applause!

Winning the game of life

This month’s Prerana festival entitled, ‘Winning the game of life - part 2’ is dedicated to celebrate the speedy recovery of H.H. Jayapataka Maharaj. Jayapataka Maharaj spoke through phone from the hospital. H.H. Radhanath Maharaj and H.H. Devamrita Maharaj were personally present. Following are some excerpts from the class.

H.H. Jaypataka Maharaj.

In the game of life, at various points we can choose to act in goodness, passion and ignorance. Whether we win ultimately depends upon the choices we make.

The Bhagavad Gita speaks about Vikarma, Karma and Akarma. If we do Akarma, i.e do our activities and offer the results to Krishna, we will win the game of life and get out of material existence.

But one who simply wants to win on the material plane, has to face the ‘dunking syndrome’. This is explained by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.  A person is dunked in the river and when he is about to die, he is allowed to breath once. But then he is dunked again. Similarly, on the material plane, apparent winning is like taking one breath before being dunked again in to misery.

H.H. Devamrita Maharaj

In Australia I spent a weekend with some University students and Professionals of Indian origin. They were expressing their anxieties over the current economic meltdown. Now they are wondering about what the game of life really is. In today’s world, people are programmed to have the vision that simply by winning and accomplishing one can be satisfied. But success does not lead to happiness. It’s the other way round. First there is internal happiness and then there is success in life. Also society feels that increased affluence leads to more happiness, even though social statistics don’t match with this misconception. In USA 45.7% of Univ. students have at least one psychiatric disorder. Other scientific observations show that there is no correlation between happiness and increase of wealth once the basics of life are met. To win the game of life, we should extend the range of science and include the Bhagavad Gita. We have to design society in such a way that internal treasure is the main thing.

H.H.Radhanath Maharaj

To win the game of life, we have to consider the foundation upon which our life is built. If the foundation is the ever shifting circumstances of the world – the economy, the wealth or our prestige - then how can we win? Our life should be built on good character and integrity. Bhagavad Gita teaches that all that is important is good character and the right intent to please Krishna. Then even if we apparently lose, we win. But without the right intent of pleasing Krishna, even though we win, we lose ultimately. For example, at Las Vegas, the casinos are designed in such a way that even if someone apparently wins money in gambling, ultimately he loses everything. Material nature is designed in the same way; even if we apparently win, we have to face old age disease and death.

In the end there was kirtan and Prasad for all. Around 650 boys attended.

Game of Love

Chetana, the festival of awakening was celebrated on Saturday at Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir. Around 330 enthusiastic girls participated in the festival.

The lecture was presented by H.G. Sita Mataji. She introduced the topic by explaining the history of Valentine's Day. She said how the Roman Emperor Claudius II was impressed by Valentine and threatened him with his life to convert him to his faith.

St. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed, on February 14th. He sacrificed his life to protect his faith and conviction.

However, today, she explained how Valentine's Day is just a gimmick for booming businesses. Even the word Saint has been taken out of the name. In all modern day festivals, God has been removed and only the enjoyment part is remaining.

She explained how in this world, everything revolves around love. She illustrated them by giving examples like love between man and woman, mother and child, between siblings, love among friends and Love for the country.

But she pointed in this material world, everything ultimately leads to frustration. She cited a recent example of a girl who was stabbed by her lover.

She explained that material love is temporary and cannot give us permanent happiness and satisfaction. According to the scriptures, the nature of the soul is to love and be loved. The soul is eternal and also has an eternal relationship with Lord Krishna.

She briefly explained how material love is temporary as the object of love is also temporary where as spiritual love is eternal as well as the object of love.

She said Lord Krishna is eternally waiting for us to return and is giving us his heart.  But the problem is we are too busy finding love in this temporary material world where everything has a beginning and an end.

She narrated life of Braj Gopis, who were completely surrendered to Krishna and did not have any selfish motive. She said although we are not on that platform but we can try to follow in their footsteps.

She said that on Valentine’s day we give our hearts to our beloved because the heart signifies the region where our soul resides.

She concluded by saying  that if we churn our hearts by chanting and hearing the holy names to become pure and soft like butter then  Lord Krishna will be tempted to steal it.

She asked all the girls to develop eternal love for Krishna and make Him our valentine.

The wonderful Chetana festival ended with an enthralling kirtan participated by everyone which was followed by scrumptious prasadam.

THE GIFT OF BHAKTI: HHRNS Xmas Eve 2008 Message at Heathrow Airport

Dear devotees,
During a one-day stopover in London on December 24th (en route from USA to Mumbai) HH Radhanath Swami visited book distributors on Oxford Street, among other surprise engagements.  In the evening at Heathrow Airport, Maharaj spoke to about 60 devotees gathered there (using Jai Nitai Prabhu as his "microphone"!), first wishing us Merry Christmas!  The following are some extracts from his message, from my notes.
your servant Nirmala Bhakti dd.   JAYA GURUDEVA!

The Lord's love descends on earth - it is not sectarian.
Jesus Christ represents God's love manifest on earth.

Every day is Janmastami/ Christmas/ Ramnaomi if we receive Krishna with love.  That is bhakti.

Thanks to all who have distributed Prabhupada's books during the Marathon, or who assisted them.

We want to perform our sadhana purely, so we have the greatest gift to give to others.

Srila Prabhupada, Prahlad Maharaj and Haridas Thakur wanted to give the gift of Krishna to others, despite any kind of difficulty.

Jesus kept preaching, though he knew he would be killed, to give that gift, bhakti.

Just Follow The Process

So yes we must understand properly under able guidance how to execute renunciation and knowledge in a way that it actually awakens our Krsna consciousness and that means simply by executing devotional service. Srila Prabhupada, he gave us a very simple formula - just follow it, you will go back to Godhead, just chant at least 16 rounds, just read his books, just rise early in the morning, take bath, come for the mangala arti, worship tulsi, hear Srimad Bhagavatam each day, perform the Guru Puja of the spiritual master, do some humble seva, maybe cleaning, may be cooking, maybe preaching, may be go for book distribution, may be raising your family, may be perform your occupational duty and dedicating your fruits of action to Krsna’s service and when he saw devotees go too much into various forms of study and renunciation, caution them - it is dangerous, just follow the process as the spiritual master is giving, Just Follow The Process, and those who followed the process are still here 30 years later, steady, faithful.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

If the spiritual master is pleased

Just be steady, just be faithful, just follow the process of Krsna consciousness and automatically the realisations, perfect renunciation and knowledge will take place. And what is devotional service - to take shelter of Krsna means to do anything in the mood of a servant of the servant of the servant to please Him. It is very simple, just try to please Krsna. Prabhupada wanted us to preach, Prabhupada wanted us to worship the deities, to chant sincerely, to study his books, very simple. If the spiritual master is pleased, Krsna will give you everything; if the spiritual master is not pleased, it doesn’t matter what efforts you make, you will never come to the conclusion.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Without a bonafide Guru, one cannot approach Krsna

Srila Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura was the greatest scholar in the world; he was a living, walking encyclopaedia of knowledge and yet he accepted a spiritual master Srila Gaur Kishore das Babaji Maharaj who had no education. In fact he hardly knew the process of reading and writing but yet he accepted him because of his sincere devotional service, (and) all knowledge was revealed to him. Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura considered Gaur Kishore das Babaji Maharaj the embodiment, the personification of the knowledge of the Absolute Truth. Gaur Kishore das Babaji was very humble, when Srila Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura approached him for initiation, he said you are a great scholar, you are a scholar of philosophy, scholar of astrology, scholar of theology, Bengali, Hindi, English… such a vocabulary he had, even great scholars from Oxford University in England would not have a vocabulary like Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura; not only did he have such a broad spectrum or usage of words but such sublime unique realisation of how each word applied to pure devotional service, in the English language and here Gaur Kishore das Babaji Maharaj who is a simple merchant he was a simple merchant grhasta, his wife died and he went to Vrindavana to surrender to Krsna. But yet Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura approached him, that unless you are my Guru Maharaj I cannot approach Krsna. Gaur Kishore das Babaji Maharaj said, you are a great scholar I am just a simple man I do not know all these things, how can I initiate you, how can I be your authority, how can I teach you; impossible, you should find some suitable person; besides; I have already decided, I am not qualified, I can never take a disciple. Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura approached him several occasions and on one occasion he was actually weeping tears, his heart was utterly broken ‘if I don’t have you as my spiritual master then I have no reason to continue my life.’ He was not speaking as some sort of a strategic way of convincing him, he was speaking from the core of his heart because Gaur Kishore das Babaji, he could see right through any one’s false pretensions, he was mystically empowered to go right into their heart and if any one was false and they were pretending to be one way but actually in their heart they were something else, he would expose them with great, great enthusiasm… Then Gaur Kishore Babaji he accepted him. Srila Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakura would write articles about him the living personification, the embodiment of knowledge, realisation of Krsna, a simple man, he didn’t get it from studying books he got it from humble service and offenceless pure chanting of the holy names: Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Apply the knowledge in spirit of humble servant

So certainly it is very important factor of our devotional service to try to deeply understand with our intelligence, the philosophy of Krsna consciousness, carefully study our scriptures. (but) we shouldn’t think this is what is going to give us realisation; it is not what is going to really give us faith; (because) the knowledge that we get, we have to apply to the spirit of humble service to the spiritual master, to the vaishnavas and our parampara, we have to chant offenselessly that is what is going to bring about really faith and realisation. Srila Prabhupada quotes how mystically the process of Krsna consciousness is; in the sense; how it transforms people’s hearts. But the qualities of God and the demigods all manifest within the body of one who surrenders to Krsna. And Prabhupada gives an example of the hunter, what was his qualification? very deeply learned and renounced? NO, but because he just followed the instruction of Narada Muni, what a transformation of the heart, from a ruthless murderer to the most gentle loving sage.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Krsna manifests through Guru

Srila Narottamadas Thakura was such a maha bhagavata, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally, when he was just a child, He appeared before him and embraced him and invested in his heart the same love of God and the same power of kirtan that Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally had. Narottamadas was utterly detached from anything of this world, his father Krsnananda das was a king. As was the only son, Krsnananda Das wanted to offer him all great wealth, beautiful wife, & everything, but Narrotama Das Thakura was utterly detached. For him it wasn’t even a question of austerity, he experienced such higher taste of Krsna consciousness, he simply was not interested. There was no charm to anything of this world to him accept devotional service and he left home; not easy for a young boy like this to leave home, the protection of family, all money, wealth, walking through the jungles, no food to eat but yet such a self realised personality, when he stood before Lokanatha Goswami, his beloved Guru Maharaj, he presented himself to be completely ignorant. Lokanatha Goswami said I cannot initiate you, Mahaprabhu has appeared to you what do you need me for, He has given you His causeless mercy, you have achieved Krsna prema, I have never accepted a disciple, I cannot, I am too much of separation of Rupa and Sanatana to take this role. But Narrotama Das Thakura, in his most gentle and loving way, he presented to Lokanatha Goswami that I am helpless, I am ignorant, I am a fool, I am completely relying on your mercy to save me from maya. How a person like this is saying that? Do you think it is fancy poetic words just appear humble? Not at all. His words were springing from his very core of his heart and what is in your core of your heart; your soul; these words were coming right directly from his soul and how is that? He is such an advanced devotee because he has completely taken shelter of Krsna in helpless dependence condition knowing that there is no other way to sustain our devotional service except by the mercy of Krsna. He had realised that Krsna manifests through Guru, so therefore genuinely he is expressing his feelings that I am helplessly dependent on your mercy Guru Maharaj. If I do not hear from you what is my hope?

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Mind is fighting over the simplest things

What to speak of the mind, what type of battle is taking place in the mind, one day you think I like this and then the next minute - I do not like this; I want this, no I do not want this; it should be like this, no it can’t be like this; I want to go here, no you should go there, but I already been there, but you should not go again, but if I go there then I will miss what is here but if you go here then you will miss what is there (laughs). In this way the mind is always fighting, we need not convince you of this reality; it is a constant battle even of the simplest things. In the United States of America they are so highly advanced in materialism that if you go into a store there are so many varieties to chose from of the same thing, you want to buy toothpaste - there are 75 brands of toothpaste all saying we are the best and you are thinking which one. oh my god, maybe this one is a nicer colour but this one has a nicer package, but this one may taste better and your mind is fighting over the simplest things of brushing your teeth, this is the nature of the mind, it is always accepting, rejecting, hankering and lamenting and then the intelligence tested to do with this mind and the intelligence is battling against itself, so many nice ideas but then those ideas rejected.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Every second there is a battle

The nature of this material world is that the environment is always changing, the environment around us is constantly being influenced by the three modes of material nature therefore nothing is stable. This material world is created in such a way that there is always fighting going on. Within in your body there are white cells and red cells and there is so much fighting going on. The environment is full of disease everywhere. A healthy person has a good immune system; if you have a strong immune system that means that when the diseases come; you have different elements within your body different components which are like little warriors, tiny little warriors and they just fight against those diseases and therefore you are healthy. The fact is that the environment is full of disease everywhere in this world but if you have these good little warriors inside of you, they keep constantly battling and every second there is a battle and if your soldiers are weak then they lose the battle. When they lose the battle you become sick and when those soldiers lose the war then you die. There are many battles but ultimately it is a war. So life is a war and every minute there is a battle taking place in this war.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

A world of the survival of the fittest

If you ever think there will be a peaceful situation in this world that will last for long that is your illusion. There is no question or possibility of peace in a battlefield, your fighting is constantly going on, from the beginning of creation to destruction, every element of material existence is having fights, gross and subtle and yet we are trying to make some nice arrangements for peace by our material manipulation through politics, through medicine, through social welfare work, through philosophy, through religion, we are trying to create peace in a massive battlefield where the fighting never ends. The only way to achieve peace is to transcend the material existence which is a place of war, survival of the fittest; even in your little body, if there are good cells and the chemicals in your body they will survive. In the jungle, the big animals they survive and the little animals are devoured; in the water, the big fish survive and the little fish are devoured; in the sky the big birds survive and the little bird are devoured or they are at least in fear of being devoured, this is a world of the survival of the fittest, Bhagavatam says one living being is a food for another and however big you are, you are going to be a food for someone.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Ultimately time conquers everything

In the jungle the lion is not a afraid of any other animal, he just roars and everyone they either have to run or you have to be his food or if he happens to be satisfied that day then he would just cast his mysterious glance upon you and you think oh what will happen to me tomorrow, everyone is afraid of the lion and the tiger because they are the king of the jungle, they are the best survivors, so they are very proud, who can harm me. But then human beings come and they capture the lion, they bring him to the zoo and put him in a cage and here is this great, great powerful lion that has conquered the whole jungle and little children are standing in front of the cave, the lion is just fried up who is angry as anything; he is totally insulted and humiliated by these little children  which he can eat within a second but he can’t get to it, he is roaring and just pacing back and forth foaming at the mouth, conquered. And then we have the human beings even the greatest more powerful human beings, everyone is being conquered by someone else according to the Bhagavatam even the greatest most powerful kings in our history they are like little puppets in the hands of their queens, conquered by their lusty desires and ultimately some other person is there to try to tear them down. And ultimately time conquers everything.

“If You Love Your Guru, Chant Nice Rounds”

“If You Love Your Guru, Chant Nice Rounds”

Excerpts from an Interview with Tamal Krishna Goswami

New Govardhana, Australia

October 10, 1983

“Without developing a spirit of service, chanting the holy name is in vain. Real devotion can be cultivated only when one receives the blessings of an unalloyed devotee. . . . Therefore to give up namaparadha one must first give up sadhu-ninda,

or finding faults with the devotees.”

     —Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura

 1. “If you love your guru, chant nice rounds.”

 2. “There are different ways you can chant sixteen rounds. You can chant very intensely; you can actually see if it is possible to chant without letting your mind deviate once in sixteen rounds. Let’s see someone undergo that test.” 3. “Similarly, someone may get an order, an instruction, or even a general instruction to the devotees. Are you going to take it? Are you going to take it seriously, to heart, as your life and soul, or are you going to take it lightly?”

 4. “Each of us should know that every morning when you chant your rounds, it is the most intimate service that you are offering to your spiritual master. It is the actual service that he asked of you at the time when you were initiated.”

 5. “This chanting of Hare Krsna is the basis on which your spiritual master has accepted you as his disciple. You should remember when you chant every morning, ‘I am offering this very intimate service to my spiritual master.’”

 6. “My godbrother Visnujana used to sit and chant with a blown-up picture of Srila Prabhupada’s ear. So, we are chanting for our spiritual master’s pleasure.”

 7. “Everything we are doing is for our spiritual master’s pleasure.”

8. “Tatra laulyam api mulyam ekalam—the only price is hankering: ‘I want You.’ There is no other necessity but the heart’s hankering—hankering for Him, hankering for His service. That should be our mood when we chant our rounds.”

 9. “Just hear the sound vibration—that’s the best chanting of all. There are different levels of recommendations, but you will see as you advance that the best chanting is when you simply hear the holy name, which is Krsna. And that is service to Krsna.”

 10. “In Hari-nama-cintamani it is said that inattentive chanting leads to all the other of the ten offenses.”

 11. “Chant sixteen rounds with full concentration, preferably sitting in one place, fully absorbed in hearing the sound vibration. Thus very quickly you will get krsna-prema and become a strong devotee. Take this to heart.”

 12. “Our morning program (chanting) is like an inoculation to protect ourselves when associating with diseased persons throughout the day.”

13. “Service begins with hearing and chanting. It begins with hearing and chanting and ends with hearing and chanting. Hearing and chanting go on in the beginning, and they go on in the liberated stage. In the spiritual world the devotees are expert in hearing and chanting Krsna’s glories. That is always there.”

100% causality rate ….

So in this great battlefield of the material world, no one survives. 100% causality rate. Every soldier from the little cells to the biggest conquers of the world, to the whales, to the lions & tigers; everyone is conquered, no one survives on the physical platform, why? Because that is the nature of material existence, you cannot change the nature of prakriti, prakriti is eternal, it is the eternal energy of the Lord, its manifestation may be transforming constantly but the principle is eternal and it cannot be changed, no matter what efforts we try to make. Therefore we should know the only way to find real peace or happiness is the soul must understand its own identity beyond the three modes of material nature of this material existence, then you rise above these modes.

H H Radhanath Swami Maharaj

The source of all ignorance …

There is one Supreme Eternal Being, Krsna, and there are innumerable living beings, the jivas. The jivas are always eternally dependent on the mercy of Krsna, it is our constitutional position. And knowledge means to always remember that and act with that understanding. And the source of all ignorance is to forget that principle and act according to that forgetfulness. So the liberated soul is the person who never forgets that I am the humble dependent servant of Krsna. And the conditioned soul forgets, thinks I am the doer, I am the controller, I am the enjoyer, by my strength, by my intelligence, by my wealth and influence, I will find the real solution to my sufferings – impossible ! This is illusion!!.

The True Nature of the Holy Name

The True Nature of the Holy Name
A Letter from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura

"I am overjoyed to hear that your enthusiasm for chanting is increasing. As
our contaminations are removed by chanting, the Lord's form, qualities, and
pastimes will be revealed to us in the holy name. There is no point in
making a separate effort to artificially remember the Lord's form,
qualities, and pastimes. The Lord and His name are one and the same. This
will be understood clearly when the coverings in your heart are removed. By
chanting without offenses you will personally realize that all perfections
come from the holy name. Through chanting, the distinction that exists
between the self, and the gross and subtle bodies, is gradually effaced and
one realizes one's own spiritual form. Once aware of the spiritual body, as
one continues to chant, one sees the transcendental nature of the Lord's
form. Only the holy name reveals the spiritual form of the living being and
then causes him to be attracted to Krsna's form. Only the holy name reveals
the spiritual qualities of the living being and then causes him to be
attracted to Krsna's qualities. Only the holy name reveals the spiritual
activities of the living being and then causes him to be attracted to
Krsna's pastimes. By service to the holy name we do not mean only the
chanting of the holy name; it also includes the other duties of the chanter.
If we serve the holy name with the body, mind, and soul, then the direction
of that service spontaneously manifests like the sun in the clear sky of the
chanter's heart. What is the nature of the holy name? Eventually all these
understandings spontaneously appear in the heart of one who chants the holy
name. The true nature of hari-nama is revealed by listening to, reading, and
studying the scriptures. It is unnecessary to write anything further on this
subject. All these things will be revealed to you through chanting."

Material Comforts Make Surrender to Krishna difficult- HG RSP Speaks

Some people have great love for material comforts which they can get from the money they have. The material comforts pamper our senses and when we pamper our senses with those material comforts, our vairagya i.e. detachment goes down. You'll see that the more you pamper your senses, your strength and determination goes down in Krishna Consciousness.

For Example:- Bumble bee has ability to make hole in the tree but if it sucks the honey and gets intoxicated then it loses all power and sometimes gets trapped even in the soft petals of the lotus flower... he can't even penetrate the soft petal in that intoxicated state!

Similarly by enjoying the material comforts, we become weak-hearted. By sleeping or eating too much, we don't feel strong in Krishna Consciousness. We put faith in our material possessions, relatives, society….etc instead of putting faith in Krishna. Srila Prabhupada says, "Some people go to Vrindavan while having kept some money in city bank, and even while chanting actual shelter is on bank only. So they cannot have full surrender and cannot completely depend on Krishna."

So the conclusion is, Krishna consciousness and sense gratification go ill together. If we want Krishna, we should rise above the chase after money, sex, power, skills, position and possessions. We have to calmly prayerfully beg Krishna to take us back in His service by chanting His holy names.

Change Your Motivations- HG RSP Speaks

Once a thief entered into a very big orchard with lot of mangoes and  coconut trees - it was evening twilight time, and he thought that he will drink water from coconuts and drink malai. He saw from distance,  some servants of the Zamindar were coming. The thief knew that if they catch him stealing in their garden, they'll beat him. He immediately got down, put some ashes all over his body, wrapped a torn blanket and sat in a meditative posture. Those people came and thought that he was a great sadhu. They thought that by dint of his mystic power the coconuts have fallen down. Immediately they called the  Zamindar, their master, who came and saw the yogi, and was impressed. He  went back quickly and called his wife and children too. They all came  and gave lot of presents, money, charity, fruits etc to the sadhu, and washed his feet.

And the 'sadhu' in turn just blessed them, and said,  "Now it is evening time, so we'll meet tomorrow my dear child." So  they all went back; then this person thought, "I just had a simple  intention of saving myself by wearing this dress of sadhu. Just that  small thing i.e. dress of sadhu is giving so much benefit, better let  me try to become an actual sadhu!" and then he pursued spiritual life  and became a great devotee of Krishna.

We all have come to Krishna Consciousness for  various reasons -- attraction of Prasadam, family culture,  intellectual titillation, improving communication skills, to become cheerful, to get peace of mind etc. But whatever be our interest, as we practice Krishna Consciousness, one day these motivations will become purified and what we will be left with will be pure Krishna Prema!

Chant with Absorption- HG RSP Speaks

While chanting the holy names if one is not absorbed in hearing, then our chanting will be watering the weeds which may grow in size bigger and bigger and may choke the devotional creeper and in this way one will not only loose taste for the Holy name but also one's heart will also become flooded with material desires like kutinati, jivhamsa, nisidhacar and many other anarthas.

Somebody may say “why is like this? I have become a devotee, why should heart become filled with unwanted things? In fact, chanting of the Holy names should produce awakening”.  No, chanting of the Holy names will not produce awakening unless one does it with a certain level of absorption and attentiveness.

It’s exactly like if somebody doesn't have a gas stove then they can’t cook. They have to be just eating whatever is available on the street side, the dirty food that is sold outside. But if you have your own gas stove then if you use properly and cook nicely, you can offer Bhoga and accept Prasadam. But the same fire has a connected danger associated with it. If it's not used properly it can create great fire accident, it can destroy so many things.

Similarly as long as we don’t chant the Holy name we are rotting in the material world not knowing the value of the spiritual life. But once the mantra diksa is obtained and one is taking shelter of Spiritual master and parampara and accepting the Holy name then one should develop one's consciousness enough to absorb oneself in the Holy name properly in order to see the desired results of softening of the heart, elevation of consciousness, attraction for Krsna and attraction for services-all these things. Otherwise chanting of the Holy names will be producing a negative effect like producing the weeds which will not only choke the devotional creeper which may also degrade the person (chanter) lower and lower by being callous to the Holy name.

Power of Prasadam- HH RNSM Speaks

Lord Chaitanya Maha prabhu just as He would worship, glorify and honored the Holy name and deity in temple, He was glorifying with same ecstasy the taste of Krishna Prasadam. Therefore we pray Maha Prasade Govinde… Just by tasting the supremely pure Prasadam that has been tasted by Govinda, and as we chant the Holy names of Krishna we become free from all our sins. Lord Chaitanya Maha prabhu began to teach his Devotees that only after millions of births when one is most fortunate does one has opportunity to taste sweetness of Krishna’s Prasad. We shouldn’t take Prasadam as something ordinary. Sometimes Devotees just sit down and eat, but Sri Chaitanya Maha prabhu wants to make us aware that the fact that we are getting Krishna Prasadam it took millions of births to achieve this platform. Only if we are so very very spiritually fortunate, can we possibly come in contact with Krishna’s Prasadam. It’s so purifying!!! Even most sinful person is guaranteed a human life if he tastes Prasadam. Even a dog or animal is elevated through cycle of evolution of soul and gets human life just by tasting or smelling piece of Prasadam. This is power of Krishna’s Prasadam!!!

Srila Prabhupada, when He went to the west, had complete faith on potency Krishna's Prasad. People  who had no affinity or attraction whatsoever for anything religious, who were addicted to illicit sex, intoxication, gambling and meat eating and all sorts of atheistic ways of life, bombarding senses with most terrible & abominable forms of sense gratification, they wouldn't  take to chanting of  the Holy names and reading the scriptures... but Srila Prabhupada gave them Prasadam. Gradually by eating Prasadam, they started following principles - no gambling, no intoxication, no illicit sex, no meat eating… just by eating Prasadam they started associating with Devotees, chanting the holy names, chanting Japa and chanting in ecstasy in Kirtan Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare   Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare !! Then they became initiated Brahmins chanting Gayatri mantra and they started going out and preaching to masses. Even the most highly qualified Brahmins would come and touch their feet and ask them to speak the teachings of Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavat. This is power of Krishna's Prasadam. And to the degree (we approach Krishna), Krishna says ye yetha mam prapadyante…

As we approach Krishna, he will reveal himself accordingly. If we approach Krishna’s Prasadam with great eagerness, that is not very difficultJ, that’s how mercy will be revealed to us.

Control The Senses by Playing special Charmer instrument - HG RSP Speaks

Senses are always like venomous snakes which are uncontrolled and who want to act as they want, and yogi is like a snake charmer. Snake charmer uses a music instrument and puts snakes into control, they become intoxicated with sound, and gradually he takes the snakes and pulls out their teeth. Once teeth are out, they cannot bite and cheat us.

Similarly in Krishna consciousness life, we know that at any time these senses can cheat us. Therefore we play the special vina/baja of Hare Krishna Maha mantra, and senses should become intoxicated with the Hare Krishna Maha mantra, and gradually we should pull out the teeth of desire for material enjoyment and lust from these senses.

Nature Of Material Enjoyment- HG RSP Speaks

HH Devamrita Maharaja gives a beautiful example: Someone is in a desert; he is very hungry and very-very thirsty for water, and suddenly a big aero plane comes and flies with a big label put up there "Fresh cooling water!" and this person is now thinking that the aero plane is going to shower water on him and his thirst will be quenched and the plane lands down.

A person comes with an empty Bisleri bottle of water, except at the bottom there is a drop of water there and says, "Show your hands" and he puts one drop and goes away. This is the nature of material enjoyment, "Over promise and under delivery!”  Maya is expert in making huge promises to allure us but offers us very little and cheats us by creating hankering and frustration.

Krishna is owner of Senses, Engage Them In His Service- HG RSP Speaks

Every individual in this world wants to get unlimited enjoyment and happiness and zero suffering, but people get exactly the opposite, i.e. unlimited suffering and no enjoyment, as said by Avadhuta Brahman in Srimad Bhagavatam. So in first place we have to know that the senses do not belong to us, they belong to Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada was once sitting on a loft, he said, "This loft belongs to the owner of the house from whom ISKCON has hired. The moment I think that this is my loft and that I need not pay the rent, then the trouble starts. Then we'll be driven out of the place. Similarly the moment you think that the senses belong to you, immediately you'll become go-dasa i.e. servant of the senses and then they'll torture you, exploit you and make you suffer. But if the senses are engaged in Krishna's service, one will become calm, peaceful and happy, as it is mentioned hrisikena hrisikesa sevanam..."

So this is the message of Srimad Bhagavatam that learning to use all the senses in the service of Krishna is the only path to rise above the business of sense gratification.
